A lovely example of a late- 19th century scrimshaw beaker, With JMC etched motif that completes this wonderful piece of folk art.
Scrimshaw is scrollwork, engravings, and carvings done in bone or ivory. Typically, it refers to the artwork created by whalers, engraved on the by-products of whales, such as bones or cartilage. It is mostly made from the bone and teeth of sperm whales, the baleen of other whales, and the tusks of walrus. It takes the form of elaborate engravings in the form of pictures and lettering on the surface of the bone or tooth, with the engraving highlighted using a pigment, or, less often, small sculptures made from the same material. However, the latter really fall into the categories of ivory carving, for all carved teeth and tusks, or bone carving. The making of scrimshaw probably began on whaling ships in the late 18th century and survived until the ban on commercial whaling. The practice survives as a hobby and as a trade for commercial artisans. A maker of scrimshaw is known as a scrimshander. The word first appeared in print in the early 19th century, but the etymology is uncertain.

What Our Customers Say
I have been a collector of oddities and antiques for many years. I have always been attracted to those antiques that tell a story, are macabre, or just speak to my soul.
When I found The House of Antiques, I was nervous because I am in the United States, and they are located in the UK. I couldn’t have been more wrong to be nervous! Every transaction was seamless! After countless conversations with Harry (who himself seems mystical, because he ALWAYS knows exactly what I would like, and reaches out to me whenever they get something in that he believes fits my tastes), I have not had ONE problem with ANY of the items received. My items have always been first-rate, fairly priced, packaged well, and shipped in a timely manner. They have an eye for the unique, and I look forward to when a new item is posted, as I know that it is something that I will not be able to find ANYWHERE else.
I now don’t just consider myself just a client of the House of Antiques, I feel that Harry who heads up the team there and I are indeed friends, and that makes the interactions even more pleasant.Chuck B
