Terracotta Figures

£695.00

“Give your hands to serve and your heart to love.”

Description

A rare opportunity to own a matched pair of late 19th Century hand crafted terracotta figures, in the form of Indian servants. These rare survivors would have been bought back from India to places such as the UK in the Victorian era, by service officers and the like. These examples would have been used as token gifts and for general decorative purposes to showcase the well-travelled gentleman of the time. The servants illustrate both the inhouse and external (Haveli) Servant of the time. Dressed in linen with minimal décor, the inhouse servant is without shoes and the outdoor servant is with simple cotton slippers. They both wear respectful head covering known as turbans.  These items are rare due to being a matched pair, their size and more importantly their untouched and original condition.

Size in inches: H 10” x W 3.5” x D 3”

Origin: India (Rajasthan)

Period: 1880 – 1910

Material: Terracotta / Linen

Item Condition

Completely solid in structure and form, Faded in areas due to natural aging. This aging extends on the sections of the linen cloth which are faded and discoloured in sections. The hands show loss as do sections across the bases and other terracotta material (this has been illustrated in the photos provided) Both neck sections show hairline cracks these do not affect the stability or form of the figures. Its exceedingly difficult to photograph all the areas in this piece, therefore we strongly suggest reviewing all the photos provided as part of this advert and propose questions where sections are unclear to avoid disappointment.

What Our Customers Say

The House of Antiques is my first choice for finding object d’ art or rare and unusual curiosities. They were able to provide items which I am using in the feature films King Lear and Memoria Draco. Prices were very reasonable, beating other companies and delivery was fast. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful.

The House of Antiques will continue to be the first company that my film company, AJF, consults for objects that are rare and difficult to find.
