Roullet Decamps Dog

Roullet & Decamps was a world-renowned French toy manufacturing company operating in the 19th Century, which specialized in automata and papier Mache objects. Founded in 1865 by Jean Roullet, the firm took the name Roullet-Decamps in 1889.

Description

A rare and truly wonderful example of a Roullet & Decamps papier Mache pull along dog toy. This precious late 19th century toy dog is intricately and expertly crafted and detailed. The piece is made of papier Mache, with a nicely shaped body showing ribs, muscular form and with a brush material neck with its original brass stamped collar still attached. When the string is pulled it makes a low growling noise and the mouth opens, with its original ceramic wheels fitted under its feet. A rare survivor and most dog like example we have ever seen due to its surface wear.

Size in inches: H 10” x W 21” x D 9”

Item Condition

Completely solid in structure and form, aging and wear across the surface with loss to the fur on its papier Mache body, which gives it a natural dog like appearance. With wear across most of the paper Mache surface showing loss in areas of detail. The rear leg has had a naive aged repair which we have left as its very secure. This item is untouched and in completely original condition a lovely object in our opinion.
