Religious scene

£445.00

Naïve in construction yet a piece of religious art in our opinion. Likely to have been part of a religious display in a church once upon a time.

Description

We share what we love, and we love this early 19th century folk art hand carved example of a painted shepherd religious scene. Detailed on pine base with a cow, angel, house, and shepherd holding a walking stick. St. Isidore was a day laborer who worked in the fields near Madrid for a landowner named Juan Vargas in the 11th to 12th centuries. He is not in the Golden Legend, but a vita written in 1275 by John the Deacon led to a widespread cult that continues to this day.

THE ANGELS AND THE OXEN

The miracle for which Isidore is most renowned was observed by Juan Vargas one morning. The other workers had complained that Isidore was spending most of the morning at prayer in church each day, but when Vargas asked him about it Isidore assured him that his prayers would make the land more fruitful and that all his work would indeed get done. Vargas wondered how the latter could be possible, so he went secretly one morning to observe. What he saw was two angels helping Isidore with the plowing, each angel leading a yoke of white oxen.

What Our Customers Say

I stumbled across The House of Antiques store after following them on Instagram. Having the need to source unusual visual items for my job I noticed something that would work perfectly for our next set design.

Being based overseas I thought dealing with a UK based company would be a logistical nightmare. This was not my experience, They were quick to respond, answered all my questions and had the item delivered right on time (fantastic job guys).

Truly amazing bunch of guys, offering amazing objects, who obviously love what they do.
